Support Services for Special Needs
There are several support services for children with special needs within the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas.
These include: Childcare, Diagnosis/Assessment, Legal Support, Special Aids (ie. equipment), Specialized Therapies
(ie. physio, occupational, language), Specialized Tutoring, and Workshop/Training.
Child Care
Community Ventures Society
Description of Services:
Childcare/respite - family to family respite where child with disability goes to a caregiver's home 1 weekend per month. Respite program funded through MCFD.
Parks & Recreation: Summer program - YOUTH GO for youth with autism 11-15; 6 weeks long; 5 hours per day. Parent fee of $20.00 per day.
Summer Program: Camp Alexander for children with physical and cognitive disabilities; 3 residential camps 5 days per camp. Referrals are made through staff at Sunnyhill Hospital and the cost of the camp is covered by MCFD.

Supported Child Development -SFSCL
Description of Services:
An MCFD funded agency that facilitate the inclusion of children requiring extra support in community programs according to children's needs. They may provide consultation to program staff, support staff, access to equipment, and referrals.

Mediated Learning Academy
Description of Services:
The Mediated Learning Academy is a new and innovative school for children from Kindergarten to Grade Twelve. Children learn through mediated learning experiences and "brain-based" teaching. Sponsored by the Variety Learning Centre, the Mediated Learning Academy thrives through small, focused classes. The mediational teacher helps the learner recognize the thinking processes that goes into solving a problem.
