Friends of Simon Tutoring Project

Description of Services:

Friends of Simon recruits, prepares and assigns university students as literacy tutors in after school programs at Mountainview, Miller Park, and Roy Stibbs Elementary Schools, and at Banting Middle School. This service is free of charge to participants.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S

Description of Services:

After School Support (G.1-G.9), twice a week for 60 or 90 minutes each. Cost ranged from $50-$90 per month. Conducts in English, Cantonese, Mandarin or Korean.

The Tri-Cities Family Resource Centre for Families
with Exceptional Children

Description of Services:

Orton Gillingham Group tutoring for students who struggle with reading. Students aged 6-14; After school theatre club - for children aged 7 and up. For children who are shy, need social skills training, or who have difficulty making friends; Teen girls social club. For girls 11 - 15. For girls who need social skills training, or who want to make new friends, Creative girl time. For girls aged 6-10. A fun supportive environment for girls who have exceptional learning and support needs; Senior Boys social recreation club. For boys aged 11 - 15. For boys who need social skills practice, who may need some guidance making and keeping friends, or learn how to deal with conflict in a positive way; junior boys social club. For boys aged 6 - 11. For boys who need social skills training and who have difficulty making and keeping friends; Co-ed Life Skills. For youth 13 and up. For students who have learning and support needs.

Description of Services:

Community Schools offer programs for children, Youth and Adults afterschool and in the evening. Programs include Arts; Cooking for Kids; Sports and Recreation; Red Cross Babysitter Certification; Scouts About a co-ed Scouting Program in Partnership with Scouts Canada and United Way; Adult Programs include Yoga and Weight Training as well as Fitness Programs. We offer Fall, Winter, Spring Sessions during the school year

Savage School of Music

Description of Services:

Savage School of Music exists to educate and inspire through private and/or group musical instruction while providing a creative and interactive learning environment.

Piano, Voice, Guitar and Drum lessons: $20 per half hour; $40 per hour.

Music Theory lessons: $25 per half hour and $50 per hour.

We teach children as young as 3 all the way up to 103.

We're available after school and evenings. Please call to book a time.

Step By Step Child Development Society

Description of Services:

Step Together Learning Centre -  after school care - for ages 30 mos - 12 years; Hyde Creek Activity Centre - drop in centre for children aged 9 - 12 years; Skills Enhancement Program - sessional summer program for children aged 5 - 7 years - a program to support optimal learning in school; Toy Loans Cupboard - for children aged birth to approx. 8 years - free toys, books and resources to families in the Tricities.

SHARE Family and Community Services Society

Description of Services:

After school activities for children (6-12 years) include tutoring, sports and recreation, arts & crafts. Activities are offered at Mountain View and Roy Stibbs Elementary Schools. Children need to be pre-registered for program activities. All activities are free of charge. Provides parents with opportunity to participate. Activities for parents include parenting workshops, employment programs, English practice groups.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S

Description of Services:

After School Support

Objectives: To assist new immigrant students in adapting and resolving the problems encountered in language and mathematics in their learning.

Targets: Gr 1 to Gr 9 (those who have been in Canada for less than 2 years)

Time: 1hr or 1.5 hr Mon to Fri in the morning or in the afternoon (time is flexible during the summer, as long as the mentor is available)

Language: English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean

Fees:

• 1hr 8 times = $60 (member) $70 (non-member)
• 1.5hr 8 times = $90 (member) $100 (non-member)

Community Ventures Society

Description of Services:

Childcare/respite - family to family respite where child with disability goes to a caregiver's home 1 weekend per month. Respite program funded through MCFD.

Parks & Recreation: Summer program - YOUTH GO for youth with autism 11-15; 6 weeks long; 5 hours per day. Parent fee of $20.00 per day.

Summer Program: Camp Alexander for children with physical and cognitive disabilities; 3 residential camps 5 days per camp. Referrals are made through staff at Sunnyhill Hospital and the cost of the camp is covered by MCFD.

YMCA Child Care Resource & Referral

Description of Services:

Services to parents: Provide child care information & referrals based on a parent's specific needs; provider referrals to community resources; provide Child Care Subsidy information & assistance; provide access to parent education opportunities.

Services to child care providers: provide child care referrals; provide access to workshops and training opportunities; provide guidance and consultation on all child care related issues; provide access to toy/resource lending.

Providing day camps and overnight camps throughout the entire summer with programs specific to 6 to 12 years of age.  We focus on social and physical development through outdoor skill developments. Catering to school groups for educational programs throughout the remainder of the year we provide consistent education and play in the outdoors.

Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver

Description of Services:

The Big Brothers Program serves boys aged 7 - 14 who have limited-to-no contact with a positive male role model. They are matched with adult male volunteers who commit to spending 2 - 4 hours a week for a minimum of one year with their Little Brothers, providing friendship, guidance and support.

Coquitlam Public Library

Description of Services:

Story Times for children birth to age 6 book programs, Reading Buddies, Red Cedar groups, library or in- school visits, summer programs. The Reading Buddies program is for children in Grades 1-4 {with teen buddies). Red Cedar is for Grades 4/5, and the Reading Link program is also for Grades 4/5 (done through the schools, starting every September). There usually are Spring Break programs for Grade4/5, and Summer Reading is for school-aged children. The Coquitam Public Library also has a French conversation circle for immersion students with teen buddies.

Description of Services:

Child minding to parents/grandparents who attend the Parent Support Circles, and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Circles program.

PLEA Community Services Society of BC

Description of Services:

Kidstart Mentoring Program: This is a volunteer program in which we match carefully screened adult mentors with kids and youth who are facing significant challenges in their lives. The mentors plan one-one weekly activities that provide their children/youth with an opportunity to experience fun, success and achievement; Kidstart Community (6-12 year olds) accepts referral from anyone in the community.

SCD-Society for Community Development

Description of Services:

SCD does not offer direct programming for parent, children or family issues. Rather we strive to ensure that collaborations exist across the Tri Cities and among the service providers which promote a resilient strong community for all residents.

Social Development Centre Child and Youth Mental Health

Description of Services:

The Social Development Centre (SDC) provides services to families. The aim of the program is to help children (5-11 years of age) with behaviour challenges. It helps children learn to manage their emotions and engage positively with others. The SDC services are short-term (3-6 months) and intensive.

Description of Services:

Counselling service for children and their parents including Play Therapy. Sliding scale fee charges ranging from $25-$110/per one-hour-session. Services offered in English, Korean, Cantonese and Mandarin.
